What would Voyager 3 contain if launched 38 years later today?
In 1977 an information package of human civilisation was launched into space, a more symbolic selection but with the intention of being intercepted or discovered by an alien civilisation. A sort of “say hello” or “we are here” from humanity.
Today, it would probably contain microchips, with smiley faces doing the correct decoding, we’d probably boast that we’d invented a virtual communication system, intelligent control systems? … Self control or control over the other. We could also put some e-books about human nature on a micro-sd card, we’ve only just got as far as psychoanalysis. Why don’t we send a picture of Osama or terrorists we can’t catch, maybe someone will lend a hand.
Maybe we could send a simple cry for Help, with the hope that in a few thousand years, when someone discovers us, there might still be a chance to save a few of us.
Or Voyager 3 could be a new Noah’s ark, a DNA capsule for possible reconstruction… In the end, it’s important to know that we are not alone and to understand how we got here. But is it worth the effort? Or would it not be more intelligent to be glad that we exist and co-exist without exploiting each other for the sake of profit, without exerting our power, our domination over each other. Is this human nature, or is it just the engine of progress? Is this evolution? Or does evolution mean creating virtual realities where we feed our neurons with “01”? Until then we have other serious problems. Soon, the Earth is getting crowded. Under human influence, the struggle for territory pushes species to the brink of extinction. For now, we are preparing a colony on Mars… In the meantime, “art must go on”, contemplating and acting, reacting with creative means, aware of the power of the present. Hoping that they exist as long as we believe they exist, as long as we believe in our creative power, to save ourselves and hope for a wider echo.
