SIMULTAN 2013

SIMULTAN FESTIVAL ed. IX
POPULAR UNKNOWN

10–12 Oct 2013 / Cetate Synagogue, House of Arts

EDITIONs WEBPAGE

Popular Unknown, this paradoxical motto, title of the issue, questions the term popularity as a social phenomenon in the collective perception, a phenomenon that defines that person or thing that is appreciated and known by everyone. The more popular something is, the more widespread and accessible it is to a greater number of people.

Since popularity is always judged in a social context, the more people who support or know about something or someone, the more people will make a judgement. In interpersonal relationships, people can alter appearances and change the way they are perceived by others, hiding their real identity. But identity remains a distinguishing characteristic of each individual, and the important issue is related to the individual’s perception of themselves and their relationship with others. We all define our identity by relating our present self to our past and future selves.

Popular Unknown wish to reflect on different juxtapositions, such as mainstream vs. underground culture, cliché vs. originality, hope, obsession, envy, fear, irony, success or failure, in an attempt to define popularity or unpopularity and self-perception.
