!t – a space for it
SIMULTAN opens a new stage of its co-production programme, this time together with Werktank, a media art production platform based in Leuven, Belgium. The partnership supports the development of a new work at the intersection of sound, perception and technical construction, in a process that will continue towards the presentation of the final results at SIMULTAN Festival 2027.
Floris Vanhoof works with handmade sound circuits, abandoned projection technologies, installations, expanded cinema performances, film and music. His practice often involves translating one medium into another: image becomes sound, sound becomes movement, and technical devices become instruments through which we can observe how perception forms, shifts, or begins to work together with imagination.
British magazine The Wire described the experience of his work as one in which “the combination of Vanhoof’s modular waveforms and near-strobing assemblages of projected light have the ability to overload the brain’s capacity for synthesis, forcing it to switch modes and enter a pre-lingual altered state.”
In the project developed as part of the SIMULTAN × Werktank co-production, Vanhoof is researching the possibility of making the motion of a double pendulum audible. Made of two connected arms, the double pendulum appears simple at first, but produces a complex and hard-to-predict movement. Its paths can be made visible through light and long-exposure photography, yet Vanhoof is interested in another question: what would this movement sound like?
“In a well known physics experiment, the chaotic motion of the double pendulum is made visible, by attaching an LED to the far end of the pendulum and photographing this with a long exposure. However, till now this beautiful chaotic movement was never made audible. This hidden potential piqued my curiosity. I want to invest time and research to find out how this can sound and function as an art installation. By mounting sound generators and a speaker on the end of the pendulum, its movement becomes audible in the form of Doppler shifts.”

In Timișoara, the installation is in its research and development phase. Floris Vanhoof will test the relationship between movement and sound with technical support from Plan Zero, a local makerspace where he will work on building and adapting the mechanism.
This direction connects to the artist’s broader interest in carefully dosing what we see and hear, what is shown or left out, heard or only suggested.
Werktank is a production platform for media art based in Leuven, Belgium. The organisation supports the creation and distribution of installation works that investigate the relationship between technology and perception, offering artists artistic, technical and production support.
The presentation is part of the SIMULTAN 2026–2027 co-production programme, developed together with local and international organisations active in the fields of media art, sound and technology.
The programme also includes collaborations with Aksioma in Ljubljana, IKLECTIK in London, obsolete studio, SEMI SILENT, Fundația DALA, Plan Zero and Ecluze pe Bega.
SIMULTAN Festival 21 — Against Resolution: Unfinished Thinking Undisciplined Art will take place in Timișoara between 24 and 27 September 2026, with extended collateral programmes until 4 October, at MX – Muzeul Corneliu Mikloși.
SIMULTAN 2026–2027 is funded by the Municipality of Timișoara through Centrul de Proiecte.
