Yun Lee is a US-born, Hong Kong raised composer, performer, and curator mostly working with text, sound, and performance. Much of their work investigates links between recording technologies and human senses to unearth histories of erasure, power relations, and shifting definitions of what being human is. They mostly do this by pushing existing formats to the edges of their conventions: surreal lectures, self-destructive records, self-deleting essays.

In short, Yun is concerned with how our filtered ways of sensing both limit and extend the ways we understand, categorize, and compose the world.

Yun currently lives in The Hague, where they curate the lecture-performance series BARTALK and organize workshops at the intersections of art, music, and technology at the instrument inventors initiative.

On Illegibility is a lecture performance on identification politics in the development and use of biometric technology such as facial recognition and fingerprint scanners. The lecture scrutinizes the algorithms that center certain bodies as a standard from which others are mere deviations, and traces how biometrics ultimately shape definitions of what a human being is. This lecture unpacks what it means to be legible in the eyes of the state and society, and looks into strategies built into “illegible” bodies and faces.
