DON’T FORGET TO CHANGE THE BEAT FROM TIME TO TIME
– A THEORY OF COUNTER-RAVING
In his keynote lecture Shintaro Miyazaki will address the relationship between different aspects of individual, social life and technology, and not only criticize the cult of the infinite progress, development, economic growth and capitalism, but moreover he will present a theoretical framework for appreciating the political value of sonic practices and the transformative power of music, sound and art more generally, through a rather new idea he calls: counter-raving.
Shintaro Miyazaki (1980*) has studied Media Studies, Musicology and
Philosophy in Basel (Switzerland) and Berlin, finishing in 2012 with a
PhD in German Media Theory at “Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin” about the
history of digitality and computers focusing on the rhythms of
algorithms. Shintaro is working on understanding the increasing
influence of mediating technologies such as software, but also invisible
protocols such as Wifi (WLAN) or surveillance tech like face
recognition and machine learning on our everyday life. His theoretical
writings are influenced by Michel Foucault, Felix Guattari, Friedrich
Kittler, Wolfgang Ernst, Franco Bifo Berardi, Wendy Hui Kyong Chun, Mara
Mills or Claudia Mareis. Currently he is working on the question of how
we could all together increase our self determination while following
our digitized everyday life, which is warming and destroying our planet
and how we could at the same time disentangle from capitalism and take
back a more livable future on earth.
In his twenties (2003-2010)
Shintaro was also a laptop musician, sound artist and local DJ (Basel,
Switzerland). One of his highlights in this path was a tour with
“Laptoporchester Berlin” in South-East Europe including a live-act at
Simultan 2009. This year long experience builds an important background
of all his theory.
