{"id":3354,"date":"2024-09-01T22:00:28","date_gmt":"2024-09-01T22:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.simultan.org\/?p=3354"},"modified":"2024-09-10T23:58:44","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T23:58:44","slug":"porocity-city-as-a-body-without-organs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.simultan.org\/en\/porocity-city-as-a-body-without-organs\/","title":{"rendered":"Porocity: City as a Body without Organs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Workshop by Arcadie Botnaru &amp; M\u0103d\u0103lina Ciocanu<\/strong><br>September 18-22, 2024 &#8211; Timi\u0219oara<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><em><strong>how we think of cities determines how cities perform<\/strong><\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally, cities have been perceived as lifeless superstructures, neatly organized concrete containers where social phenomena find their distribution \u2013 a backdrop for human activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What stories, what urban legends would we be able to tell if we thought of the city as a body, alive and breathing, a body that thinks and feels, just like the human body?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim of this workshop is to excavate the city from its anthropocentric ruins, re-story the city as an animate ecology, as an assemblage of animate beings in interaction with each other, where each being \u201ccontributes to the city&#8217;s constant state of becoming, shaping and reshaping the living, breathing organism that is the urban landscape\u201d (Bennet, 2009).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an attempt to reveal the workings of this \u201curban unconscious\u201d and its impact on the urban subjectivity, as part of this workshop, we would like to perform a kind of sonic \u201cpsychotopical analysis\u201d (Thrift, 2008) of Timisoara\u2019s urban landscape by tuning into \u201cthe hum of the city\u201d (Thrift, 2005), listening closely to what the city has to say. By using Richardson\u2019s (2015) \u201cschizocartography\u201d and Oliveros\u2019 (2005) \u201cdeep listening\u201d as its (non)methodological pillars, the workshop will attempt to draw a speculative sonic map of Timisoara revealing the city\u2019s \u201cunconscious\u201d transversed by myriads of \u201clines of flight\u201d (Deleuze &amp; Guattari, 1987) to alternative past, present and future spacetimes in which the city is constantly \u201cbecoming otherwise\u201d.\u00a0 [<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/15KIOz0QALyuR-TRLH8wdiu4sSZMj_H7G\/view?usp=drive_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read the concept note here<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outcomes of the workshop will be incarnated in a collective sonic art installation titled \u201cColoana Sonor\u0103 Infinit\u0103\u201d intended to reflect the idea that the city is a living body, a constantly moving assemblage, a loud symphony of human and non-human voices.\u00a0<br>The installation results from the workshop will be presented during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1011473056732331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SIMULTAN festival XIX<\/a> between 3-6 October 2024.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>METHODOLOGY<\/strong><br>As part of the <em>Porocity: City as a Body without Organs <\/em>5-day workshop, participants will engage in experiential learning activities blending together various walking research methodologies and sound crafting practices. Workshop time will be divided between conceptualization sessions, where participants will (re)engage with the city through insights drawn from new materialist and post humanist thought, and de\/construction sessions, where the group will experiment with object and sound design.\u00a0<br><br>\u21b3 Object and material foraging: <br>We will forage objects from the city, flea markets, and own homes that show the moving life of the city. These objects may include everyday items, discarded materials, or artifacts with historical or cultural significance, symbolizing the interconnectedness of human and non-human elements in the city&#8217;s ecology.<br><br>\u21b3 Deep listening: <br>Inspired by Pauline Oliveros\u2019 deep listening practice, we will engage in deep listening exercises to attune to the urban soundscape. We will listen intently, reconsidering the existence of sounds that often go unnoticed, acknowledging how these auditory elements contribute to the city\u2019s identity.<br><br>\u21b3 Sound harnessing and collaging: <br>We will collect and harness archival sounds, ambient city soundscapes, music, and recorded conversations, aiming to explore Timi\u0219oara&#8217;s \u2018unconscious\u2019 and the diverse soundwaves\u2014both human and non-human\u2014that shape its sonic environment. He holds a BS in Psychology and an MA in Experiential Learning. Arcadie designs and facilitates non-formal educational programs in which he weaves together experiential and art-based learning methodologies with theoretical insights from &#8216;post&#8217; philosophies, feminist writings and Indigenous cosmologies, in an attempt to craft a posthuman pedagogical praxis for a planet-yet-to-come. His ethical focus is on social justice and ecological equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>M\u0103d\u0103lina Ciocanu <\/strong>works with sound, education, ethnography, research, and and and\u2026 She re\/searches transdisciplinarity at Columbia University and makes and mixes music under the secret stage name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dj.bors\/\">BOR\u0218<\/a>. She plays around with sound, inquiring the collectivity and materialism of &#8216;producing&#8217;-composing-creating (and hosted the workshop &#8220;Ciule\u0219te Urechile&#8221; based on <em>deep listening<\/em>). M\u0103d\u0103lina was born in Chi\u0219in\u0103u and has spent the past 15 years in the Americas, with a recent comeback in this hemisphere.
