Sonic Fiction - Synaesthetic Videos from Austria - by INDEX [at]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A series of experimental films representing the Austrian music, film and audiovisual scene at the turn of the 21st century. Over the last 15 years, the Austrians have become celebrated for their development of the progressive electronic scene, whether radical ‘laptop-artists’ seeking the limits for hard and software (Peter Rehberg, Farmers manual), electro-acoustic composers looking for new applications for their guitars (Christian Fennesz) or a post-rock band who demonstrate classic beat approches via digital media (Radian). Animators and video creators work alongside them: if the musicians focus on the modern role of the pure sound, silence, new abstraction and narration through technology, then the filmmakers, concentrating on light, dark, minimalism and the treatment of technical images, have a lot in common with them.

INDEX
Austrian avant-garde film represents a success story in itself. In no other film genre have domestic filmmakers secured such an international recognition and renown. A number of different factors have enabled its development, one of which is possibly the general radicalisation of the Viennese art scene in the 1950s and 1960s, in particular the Vienna Actionists.
The dynamism of Austrian experimental cinema has also been supported actively by a distributor, Sixpack Film, founded in 1990 with the help of local filmmakers. Since then, Sixpack Film has provided a wide access to festivals around the world and other suitable venues to audiovisual works which have no place in a commercial system.
Over the years, the audiovisual field has undergone extensive expansion and now includes video, generation and manipulation of digital images, and multimedia production. Beside the initial task of public screenings, Sixpack Film started INDEX in collaboration with Medienwerkstatt Wien in 2004. A DVD label specialized in audiovisual publications relevant to the history of international and Austrian film, video and media art.

Isabelle Piechaczyk was born in Paris. After university studies she started in 1989 to organize concerts, performances and screenings at Les Etablissements Phonographiques de l’Est, a cult underground location in Paris dedicated to industrial and avant-garde music and other experimental art forms. Few years later, as record shop manager and one of the initiators of the Büro events, she contributed to the development of the Parisian electronic music scene. In 1999 she moved to Vienna and set up Mdbs (Mego direct booking Service). She now works for INDEX DVD Edition since its creation in 2004.
