Mary Magsamen & Stephan Hillerbrand [usa] - Glowstick, 3:30, 2008

In Glow Stick, the green glow from a glow stick in our mouths illuminates portions of our bodies as we pass the glow stick back and forth. The audio is a layering of suspenseful and tense music that would be heard in a movie. By referencing night vision in an age of heightened homeland security this piece takes an absurd and sarcastic look at the excessive use of surveillance today.

The collaborative husband/wife team of Mary Magsamen and Stephan Hillerbrand work with video and installation to exploring ideas about relationships, perception and our daily interactions with each other. Using abstraction and illusion to create a new lens or way of looking at the world they create sensual and visceral videos of which include everyday visual vocabulary of our lives such as bubble gum, a kiss or a cup of coffee. They show the familiar to us in an unfamiliar and cinematic way.
