JEREMY LAFFON [FR] - Hide And Seek, 03:46, 2005

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The video begins with an arranged panoramic plan, where a duplicated character emerges while hopping, as a child walking in the wood - directly coming from a tale for children -.
Then, the character seems to be taken in a set of hide-and-seek, where he’s himself attacked, pursued, and becomes the prey each time that he’s exposed to the external glance (off-camera).
We don’t really know who is the predator : is the character hiding to pursue the beast, or to
flee from it?

Born in 1978 (in France), Jérémy Laffon begins its artistic research with an exclusively pictorial and poetic work, then widens his field of expression to other supports such as engraving, photography, performance (and happening), as well as the video, still preserving a poetic unit revealing various influences (like the one of Samuel Beckett, Fluxus, Francis Alÿs, Fischli & Weiss, etc).
It is while collaborating with various artistic associations that the artist experienced his processes (sometimes establishing them in places not envisaged for this purpose, such as music festivals or the public area). Today, these concepts constitute a singular language, revolving around the phenomena of flow, transitory, immanence and burlesque, while preserving an obsessional and ironic rigour towards the process of creation and the relation with the spectator. Talking about himself as an usurper, a professional amateur, Jérémy Laffon develops the role of the intruder, the parasite, and carries a glance full of humour and cynicism on the status and the gesture of the artist, questioning concepts such as manipulation (through dominater/dominated report), stereotype or vanity.
